From your Editors:
We had a great open chat Thursday night... We even got just a bit off subject,
and one of the things we talked about, you will see under "Our Weekly
Reading" section. We were pleased to have a couple of new folks subscribe
to our newsletter this week and we welcome them both. One is on AOL and
hopefully will join us some Thursday night 11 PM ET in our Golden
Gates Chat Room. The other person is one of about 10% of our subscribers who
are not on AOL but learned about us thru friends or websites and still wish to
subscribe.
Be sure to check out the Calendar at the end. November 22 is Thanksgiving and is
a holiday for the HOST's as well. The room will certainly be open to anyone that
wants to visit, there just MIGHT not be any hosts there, but stop in and see if
you'd like to.
Don't forget, this Thursday is our special LETTERS, POEMS and SONGS night!

Discovered this information and thought I would get it out to as many as
possible since the deadline is Veterans Day 2001. I talked to the people at
Kinko's and received a beautiful brochure explaining this opportunity.
Anyone may take a photo of a veteran who died in Vietnam to Kinko's and they
will scan it and upload the photo for you to The Virtual Wall at NO CHARGE
until Veteran's Day 2001. This project is known as 'Put A Face with A Name'
and Kinko's wanted to contribute in this way to honor those who paid with
their lives.
I suggest you all pay a visit to this website as it is a beautiful tribute and
let families know that this exists.

Calves Head Cake
Parboil a calf's head with some sage; then cut off the meat, and return the
bones to the broth, and boil them until the latter is greatly reduced.
Put the meat which is already cut into pieces into a jar with the tongue, some
cloves, mace, nutmeg and some slices of ham. Cover the jar with a plate, and
bake the whole some hours until it is thoroughly well cooked, then add the
brains, beaten up with an egg. Some hard-boiled eggs must be placed
round a mould, and the meat poured in.

- 2 tablespoons of Mustard (just regular

- Fill remainder of the blender to within 1
inch from top with water
2. Blend the mixture until thoroughly mixed.
3. "Insert" the blended sauce into your "bird of choice"
using a large cooking syringe. Insert in thighs, legs, breasts, etc.
4. Rub the bird all over with regular ole French's Yellow Mustard
5. Sprinkle outside "to taste" with Tony Chacherie's Creole
Seasoning.
6. Deep Fat Fry the bird in peanut oil brought to 300deg's.
A 6-7 lb. Chicken will take approx 20-21 minutes. A 14 lb. Turkey approx 27-28

this could have been because he was a southerner who fought for the north or

OUR GOAL: to enhance your Genealogy activity, knowledge, and

actions; specifically the "Civil War" that our ancestors lived
through and died because of.
Captain Oliver Wendell Holmes of the 20th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment,
said it so well.

environment that is NOT judgmental and to address ALL aspects of this
"Pivotal Period" in our History, with honesty and truth (as we know
it).
We do "Fireside Stories" about the battles, the people and the
social happenings. In addition we dedicate one Thursday a month to the sharing
of Songs, Poems and Letters from that era. So come back and visit; we'll save
you a seat at the Fireside, and keep the Cider warm..... For a full listing of
upcoming events, either look on the Schedule at the end of this Notice or in
the Upcoming Events of the Genealogy Forum.
As we review the logs, and we find new visitors who show an interest or have
entered into discussions on this topic in our Thursday sessions, we
automatically add you to the distribution for this "Weekly
Fireside."
AND Hey!, TO YOU "FIRST-TIMERS" THIS WEEK, "Welcome"... :)
We heartily enjoyed your visit and participation. We really "fire
up" with what members bring to the discussions, and we hope to see more
of you.... Note that for any reason, should you desire to be removed from
distribution of this "Weekly Missif," just drop us a line and we
will comply with your wishes "post-haste".

From your Editors:
Thursday night was our Letters, songs, and poems. Amy sang for us and even
stayed on key. We also read another chapter out of "Chronicles of the
Great Rebellion from the Beginning of the Same Until the Fall of Vicksburg"
by Rev. Allen M. Scott. It is written quite differently than most books. It is
written in the style of the Bible, with verses and chapters. Quite interesting!
With this being Veteran's Day, I want to thank ALL our Veterans of all the wars
for the Freedom we have been given and take for granted all too often. Be sure
to see the tributes later in the newsletter. Also be sure to visit the Genealogy
Forum's tribute to World War II Veterans as well as those from subsequent wars.

"WHY I LOVE HER"
(America)
You ask me Why I Love Her?
Well, give me time and I'll explain.
Have you seen a Kansas sunset
Or an Arizona rain?
Have you drifted on a bayou
Down Louisiana way?
Have you watched a cold fog drifting
Over San Francisco Bay?
Have you heard a bobwhite calling
In the Carolina pines,
Or heard the bellow of a diesel
At the Appalachia mines?
Does the call of Niagara thrill you
When you hear her waters roar?
Do you look with awe and wonder
At her Massachusetts shore,
Where men who braved a hard new world
First stepped on Plymouth's rock?
And do you think of them when you stroll
Along a New York City dock?
Have you seen a snowflake drifting
In the Rockies, way up high?
Have you seen the sun come blazing down
From a bright Nevada sky?
Do you hail to the Columbia
As she rushes to the sea,
Or bow your head at Gettysburg
At our struggle to be free?
Have you seen the mighty Tetons?
Have you watched an eagle soar?
Have you seen the Mississippi
Roll along Missouri's shore?
Have you felt a chill at Michigan
When on a winter's day
Her waters rage along the shore
In thunderous display?
Does the word "Aloha" make you warm?
Do you stare in disbelief
When you see the surf
Come roaring in at Waimea Reef?
From Alaska's cold to the Everglades,
From the Rio Grande to Maine,
My heart cries out, my pulse runs fast
At the might of her domain.
You ask me Why I Love Her?
I've a million reasons why:
My Beautiful America,
Beneath God's wide, wide sky.

OUR WEEKLY READING...
What is a Veteran?
Some veterans bear visible signs of their service: a missing limb, a jagged
scar, a certain look in the eye. Others may carry the evidence inside them: a
pin holding a bone together, a piece of shrapnel in the leg - or perhaps
another sort of inner steel: the soul's ally forged in the refinery of
adversity. Except in parades, however, the men and women who have kept America
safe wear no badge or emblem. You can't tell a vet just by looking.
What is a vet?
He is the cop on the beat who spent six months in Saudi Arabia sweating two
gallons a day making sure the armored personnel carriers didn't run out of
fuel.
He is the barroom loudmouth, dumber than five wooden planks, whose frat-boy
behavior is outweighed a hundred times in the cosmic scales by four hours of
exquisite bravery near the 38th parallel.
She - or he - is the nurse who fought against futility and went to sleep
sobbing every night for two solid years in Da Nang.
He is the POW who went away one person and came back another - or didn't come
back AT ALL.
He is the Quantico drill instructor who has never seen combat - but has saved
countless lives by turning slouchy, no-account rednecks and gang members into
Marines, and teaching them to watch each other's backs.
He is the parade - riding Legionnaire who pins on his ribbons and medals with
a prosthetic hand.
He is the career quartermaster who watches the ribbons and medals pass him by.
He is the three anonymous heroes in The Tomb Of The Unknowns, whose presence
at the Arlington National Cemetery must forever preserve the memory of all the
anonymous heroes whose valor dies unrecognized with them on the battlefield or
in the ocean's sunless deep.
He is the old guy bagging groceries at the supermarket - palsied now and
aggravatingly slow - who helped liberate a Nazi death camp and who wishes all
day long that his wife were still alive to hold him when the nightmares come.
He is an ordinary and yet an extraordinary human being - a person who offered
some of his life's most vital years in the service of his country, and who
sacrificed his ambitions so others would not have to sacrifice theirs.
He is a soldier and a savior and a sword against the darkness, and he is
nothing more than the finest, greatest testimony on behalf of the finest,
greatest nation ever known.
So remember, each time you see someone who has served our country, just lean
over and say Thank You. That's all most people need, and in most cases it will
mean more than any medals they could have been awarded or were awarded.
Two little words that mean a lot, "THANK YOU".
"It is the soldier, not the reporter,
Who has given us freedom of the press.
It is the soldier, not the poet,
Who has given us freedom of speech.
It is the soldier, not the campus organizer,
Who has given us the freedom to demonstrate.
It is the soldier,
Who salutes the flag,
Who serves beneath the flag,
And whose coffin is draped by the flag,
Who allows the protester to burn the flag."
Father Denis Edward O'Brien, USMC
....... and there you have it

social happenings.

AND Hey!, TO YOU "FIRST-TIMERS" THIS WEEK, "Welcome"... :)

up" with what members bring to the discussions, and we hope to see more

Our Mission: To serve all
genealogists by providing an enjoyable online environment with as many helpful
and reliable resources as possible.
============================================
From your Editors:
We want to thank those of you who joined up for open chat this past Thursday. It
was nice to be able to find some Civil War Ancestors for a couple of our
visitors. They'll be sending for those pension records. We hope they will share
what they find out when the records are received.
I would like to welcome several new folks to the distribution of the Weekly
Fireside. Not sure exactly how they found out about us.... I'm thinking maybe it
was through the Genealogy Forum's Military Resources page on the Internet.
This is just a reminder... With this coming Thursday being Thanksgiving, the
HOSTS are given the night off and the chatroom is officially a drop-in hour (2
hours for us). The room is open for anyone who wants to stop in and you MIGHT
find one or more of the hosts there. (not guaranteed, however) We all want to
wish you and yours a very HAPPY THANKSGIVING.

Did you know...
A PROCLAMATION
BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
The year that is drawing toward its close has been filled with the blessings of
fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly
enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have
been added, which are of so extraordinary a nature that they cannot fail to
penetrate and soften the heart which is habitually insensible to the
ever-watchful providence of Almighty God.
In the midst of a civil war of unequaled magnitude and severity, which has
sometimes seemed to foreign states to invite and provoke their aggressions,
peace has been preserved with all nations, order has been maintained, the laws
have been respected and obeyed, and harmony has prevailed everywhere, except in
the theater of military conflict, while that theater has been greatly contracted
by the advancing armies and navies of the Union.
Needful diversions of wealth and strength from the fields of peaceful industry
to the national defense have not arrested the plow, the shuttle, or the ship;
the ax has enlarged the borders of our settlements, and the mines, as well of
iron and coal as of the precious metals, have yielded even more abundantly than
heretofore. Population has steadily increased, notwithstanding the waste that
has been made in the camp, the siege, and the battle-field, and the country,
rejoicing in the consciousness of augmented strength and vigor, is permitted to
expect continuance of years with large increase of freedom.
No human counsel hath devised, nor hath any mortal hand worked out these great
things. They are the gracious gifts of the Most High God, who, while dealing
with us in anger for our sins, hath nevertheless remembered mercy.
It has seemed to me fit and proper that they should be solemnly, reverently, and
gratefully acknowledged as with one heart and one voice by the whole American
people. I do, therefore, invite my fellow-citizens in every part of the United
States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign
lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next as a day of
thanksgiving and praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the heavens.
And I recommend to them that, while offering up the ascriptions justly due to
Him for such singular deliverances and blessings, they do also, with humble
penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience, commend to His tender
care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners, or sufferers in the
lamentable civil strife in which we are unavoidably engaged, and fervently
implore the interposition of the Almighty hand to heal the wounds of the nation,
and to restore it, as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes, to the
full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquillity, and union.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the
United States to be affixed.
Done at the city of Washington this third day of October, in the year of our
Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-three, and of the Independence of the
United States the eighty-eighth.
ABRAHAM LINCOLN.
By the President:
WILLIAM H. SEWARD,
Secretary of State.

OUR WEEKLY READING...
I know this isn't Civil War but it's just so special, I had to share it with you
all.
"Dirt Roads "
What's mainly wrong with society today is that too many Dirt Roads have been
paved. There's not a problem in America today, crime, drugs, education, divorce,
delinquency that wouldn't be remedied, if we just had more Dirt Roads, because
Dirt Roads give character.
People that live at the end of Dirt Roads learn early on that life is a bumpy
ride. That it can jar you right down to your teeth sometimes, but it's worth it,
if at the end is home...a loving spouse, happy kids and a dog. We wouldn't have
near the trouble with our educational system if our kids got their exercise
walking a Dirt Road with other kids, from whom they learn how to get along.
There was less crime in our streets before they were paved.
Criminals didn't walk two dusty miles to rob or rape, if they knew they'd be
welcomed by 5 barking dogs and a double barrel shotgun. And there were no drive
by shootings. Our values were better when our roads were worse! People did not
worship their cars more than their kids, and motorists were more courteous, they
didn't tailgate by riding the bumper or the guy in front would choke you with
dust & bust your windshield with rocks. Dirt Roads taught patience.
Dirt Roads were environmentally friendly, you didn't hop in your car for a quart
of milk you walked to the barn for your milk. For your mail, you walked to the
mail box. What if it rained and the Dirt Road got washed out? That was the best
part, then you stayed home and had some family time, roasted marshmallows and
popped popcorn and pony rode on Daddy's shoulders and learned how to make
prettier quilts than anybody. At the end of Dirt Roads, you soon learned that
bad words tasted like soap.
Most paved roads lead to trouble, Dirt Roads more likely lead to a fishing creek
or a swimming hole. At the end of a Dirt Road, the only time we even locked our
car was in August, because if we didn't some neighbor would fill it with too
much zucchini. At the end of a Dirt Road, there was always extra springtime
income, from when city dudes would get stuck, you'd have to hitch up a team and
pull them out. Usually you got a dollar...always you got a new friend...at the
end of a Dirt Road!

found similar situations when researching your own Ancestors.
As most of you know, my alter-ego is BitsoBluenGray
and on my http://www.bitsofblueandgray.com
website I have asked for folks to make suggestions on future columns. Well I got
a great letter from a very nice lady telling me that her ancestor was born in KY
and fought on the northern side. It seems her ggrandfather lost his land in a
lawsuit and moved west to AR. She has been trying to find out whether this could
have been because he was a southerner who fought for the north or perhaps for
economic reasons. She has suggested that I do a column on this subject.
Sooooooooo..... I'm asking if there are any of you who have done this kind of
research or knows anything about it, to please send me email, preferably to [email protected]
but [email protected] will be ok

This Day in the Civil War
Tuesday Nov. 26 1861
TRIUMPHANT TRENT TAKER TOASTED
Eleven days ago Captain Charles Wilkes committed the most famous act of his
career: his USS San Jacinto waited until Her Majesty’s mail packet Trent left
Havana, Cuba. Once they were in international waters Wilkes had ordered the ship
to heave to, under threat of arms, and had removed four passengers, the
Confederate commissioners to London and Paris, Mason and Slidell, and the mens’
secretaries. Tonight, having dropped the prisoners into confinement on an island
in Boston Harbor, Wilkes was guest of honor at a huge banquet in Boston.
Tomorrow the Trent would dock in London and the story of her voyage made known.
The reaction would be quite different there.

I'm not sure this is where I reply but I thought I would give it a try. I
noticed in the Weekly Fireside Chat newsletter that we could ask for help in
locating a picture of a gravesite of a Civil War ancestor. Well my 3rd
Great-grandfathers both served, 1 in the south and 1 in the north. Their names
were:
Asahel IVES buried Bethel Cemetery, Bethel, Fayette Co. IA
Charles Dudley BOYETT AKA CD buried Union Hill Cemetery, Pensacola, Escambia Co.
Florida.
If any live in the areas I would gladly pay whatever the cost.
Thank you
Joe
((((Joe)))) This is a note I received from Jim re the above:
Joe ([email protected]) has this Help
Request in our newsletter for a bit for a picture of a CSA CW Ancestor buried in
Pensacola, Florida. I did find the cemetery on the day I was returning to
Colorado last Tuesday. The Union Hill Cemetery is a church cemetery that used to
be administered by the Union Hill Baptist Church for many, many years. It has
since folded and is now administered by Emerald Coast Community Church (Southern
Baptist Convention). It was raining so I couldn't get a picture but I did find
the gravestone.
His wife was named Elizabeth.
There are many Boyett's in the older cemetery. I found a number of graves of
male Boyett's that looked like they had fought in every war since the Civil War.
That seems to be one patriotic family but it must have been hard on the
womenfolk.
The cemetery is located at the junction of Fairfield Boulevard and 69th Street
over on the West side of Pensacola.

OUR WEEKLY READING...
A WORD FOR THE HOUR
by John Greenleaf Whittier
(1807-1892)
The firmament breaks up. In black eclipse
Light after light goes out. One evil star,
Luridly glaring through the smoke of war,
As in the dream of the Apocalypse,
Drags others down. Let us not weakly weep
Nor rashly threaten. Give us grace to keep
Our faith and patience; wherefore should we leap
On one hand into fratricidal fight,
Or, on the other, yield eternal right,
Frame lies of laws, and good and ill confound?
What fear we? Safe on freedom's vantage ground
Our feet are planted; let us there remain
In un-revengeful calm, no means untried
Which truth can sanction, no just claim denied,
The sad spectators of a suicide!
They break the lines of Union: shall we light
The fires of hell to weld anew the chain
On that red anvil where each blow is pain?
Draw we not even now a freer breath,
As from our shoulders falls a load of death
Loathsome as that the Tuscan's victim bore
When keen with life to a dead horror bound?
Why take we up the accursed thing again?
Pity, forgive, but urge them back no more
Who, drunk with passion, flaunt disunion's rag
With its vile reptile blazon. Let us press
The golden cluster on our brave old flag
In closer union, and, if numbering less,
Brighter shall shine the stars which still remain.
16th, 1st month, 1861.
....... and there you have it

I got a great letter from a very nice lady telling me that her ancestor was born
in KY and fought on the northern side. It seems her ggrandfather lost his land
in a lawsuit and moved west to AR. She has been trying to find out whether this
could have been because he was a southerner who fought for the north or perhaps
for economic reasons. She has suggested that I do a column on this subject.
Sooooooooo..... I'm asking if there are any of you who have done this kind of
research or knows anything about it, to please send me email, preferably to [email protected]
but [email protected] will be ok
too. I'd like to hear your input.
THANKS!!!

WHAT WE ARE ABOUT
OUR FOCUS: the "History of the American (United States) Civil War",
with byproducts of laughter, and comraderie!
OUR GOAL: to enhance your Genealogy activity, knowledge, and "wisdom"
by talking about the history surrounding their lives and actions; specifically
the "Civil War" that our ancestors lived through and died because of.
Captain Oliver Wendell Holmes of the 20th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, said
it so well.
"I think it is a noble and pious thing
To do whatever we may by written
Word or molded bronze and sculpted
Stone to keep our memories, our
Reverence and our love alive and
To hand them on to new generations
All too ready to forget."
OUR PROMISE: to provide an "online"
environment that is NOT judgmental and to address ALL aspects of this
"Pivotal Period" in our History, with honesty and truth (as we know
it).
We do "Fireside Stories" about the battles, the people and the social
happenings. In addition we dedicate one Thursday a month to the sharing of
Songs, Poems and Letters from that era. So come back and visit; we'll save you a
seat at the Fireside, and keep the Cider warm..... For a full listing of
upcoming events, either look on the Schedule at the end of this Notice or in the
Upcoming Events of the Genealogy Forum.
As we review the logs, and we find new visitors who show an interest or have
entered into discussions on this topic in our Thursday sessions, we
automatically add you to the distribution for this "Weekly Fireside."
AND Hey!, TO YOU "FIRST-TIMERS" THIS WEEK, "Welcome"... :)
We heartily enjoyed your visit and participation. We really "fire up"
with what members bring to the discussions, and we hope to see more of you....
Note that for any reason, should you desire to be removed from distribution of
this "Weekly Missif," just drop us a line and we will comply with your
wishes "post-haste".
