Did you know...

.....that Berdan's Sharpshooters used a single shot breech-loading 1859 Sharps rifle.

.....that President Andrew Johnson's wife taught him how to read soon after they were married.

.....that Brigadier General Phillip St. George Cocke of Virginia, a graduate of West Point and a brigade commander at First Bull Run, returned home a few months after the battle in poor health and the day after Christmas, 1861, committed suicide.

.....that during war time, the cartridges used in the Sharps carbine were linen or paper and only after the war were metalllic cartridges used.

.....that when Abraham Lincoln delivered his Gettysburg Address on Nov. 19, 1863, there were an estimated 15,000 in attendance.

.....that when the Civil War began, the U.S. Navy had 90 ships, 1.300 officers and 7,500 seamen. In 1865, at the end of the war, it had grown to 670 ships, 6700 officers and 51,500 seamen.

.....that Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest, a naturally gifted commander, began the war with no military training and less than a year of formal education.

.....that Company Q in the Confederate army was the sick list.

.....that before the war Confederate General A. P. Hill proposed marriage to Ellen Marcy. She declined and later married Union General George B. McClellan.

.....that on October 21, 1861, a U. S. Senator from Oregon, Colonel Edward D. Baker was killed when he led his troops into a Confederate ambush at the Battle of Ball's Bluff.

.....that First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln paid $2000 for the dress she wore to the 1865 inauguration.

....that Thomas Jefferson was the grandfather of Confederate General George W. Randolph.

Discovered this information and thought I would get it out to as many as possible since the deadline is Veterans Day 2001. I talked to the people at Kinko's and received a beautiful brochure explaining this opportunity.

Anyone may take a photo of a veteran who died in Vietnam to Kinko's and they will scan it and upload the photo for you to The Virtual Wall at NO CHARGE until Veteran's Day 2001. This project is known as 'Put A Face with A Name' and Kinko's wanted to contribute in this way to honor those who paid with their lives.

I suggest you all pay a visit to this website as it is a beautiful tribute and let families know that this exists.

Calves Head Cake
Parboil a calf's head with some sage; then cut off the meat, and return the bones to the broth, and boil them until the latter is greatly reduced.  Put the meat which is already cut into pieces into a jar with the tongue, some cloves, mace, nutmeg and some slices of ham. Cover the jar with a plate, and bake the whole some hours until it is thoroughly well cooked, then add the brains, beaten up with an egg.  Some hard-boiled eggs must be placed round a mould, and the meat poured in.

Cajun Chicken Receipt

The following makes a blender's worth of sauce. One blender will do a 14 lb Turkey or any number of chickens equaling 14 or 15 lbs in weight.

Now here we go.....

1. Add the following to a blender:

• 3 - 2 fluid oz bottles of Onion Juice
  
• 2 - 2 fluid oz bottles of Garlic Juice
  
• 2 fluid ounces of Worchester Sauce
  
• 2 tablespoons of Mustard (just regular yellow French's)
  
• 3 fluid ounces of Louisiana Hot Sauce
  
• 1/5th of a 17 oz shaker of Tony Chacherie's Creole Seasoning
  
• Fill remainder of the blender to within 1 inch from top with water
  

2. Blend the mixture until thoroughly mixed.

3. "Insert" the blended sauce into your "bird of choice" using a large cooking syringe. Insert in thighs, legs, breasts, etc.

4. Rub the bird all over with regular ole French's Yellow Mustard

5. Sprinkle outside "to taste" with Tony Chacherie's Creole Seasoning.

6. Deep Fat Fry the bird in peanut oil brought to 300deg's.

A 6-7 lb. Chicken will take approx 20-21 minutes. A 14 lb. Turkey approx 27-28 minutes.

Well I got a great letter from a very nice lady telling me that her ancestor was born in KY and fought on the northern side. It seems her ggrandfather lost his land in a lawsuit and moved west to AR. She has been trying to find out whether this could have been because he was a southerner who fought for the north or perhaps for economic reasons. She has suggested that I do a column on this subject. Sooooooooo..... I'm asking if there are any of you who have done this kind of research or knows anything about it, to please send me email, preferably to [email protected] but [email protected] will be ok too. I'd like to hear your input.

Thursday night was our Letters, songs, and poems. Amy sang for us and even stayed on key. We also read another chapter out of "Chronicles of the Great Rebellion from the Beginning of the Same Until the Fall of Vicksburg" by Rev. Allen M. Scott. It is written quite differently than most books. It is written in the style of the Bible, with verses and chapters. Quite interesting!

With this being Veteran's Day, I want to thank ALL our Veterans of all the wars for the Freedom we have been given and take for granted all too often. Be sure to see the tributes later in the newsletter. Also be sure to visit the Genealogy Forum's tribute to World War II Veterans as well as those from subsequent wars.

A PROCLAMATION

BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

The year that is drawing toward its close has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added, which are of so extraordinary a nature that they cannot fail to penetrate and soften the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever-watchful providence of Almighty God.

In the midst of a civil war of unequaled magnitude and severity, which has sometimes seemed to foreign states to invite and provoke their aggressions, peace has been preserved with all nations, order has been maintained, the laws have been respected and obeyed, and harmony has prevailed everywhere, except in the theater of military conflict, while that theater has been greatly contracted by the advancing armies and navies of the Union.

Needful diversions of wealth and strength from the fields of peaceful industry to the national defense have not arrested the plow, the shuttle, or the ship; the ax has enlarged the borders of our settlements, and the mines, as well of iron and coal as of the precious metals, have yielded even more abundantly than heretofore. Population has steadily increased, notwithstanding the waste that has been made in the camp, the siege, and the battle-field, and the country, rejoicing in the consciousness of augmented strength and vigor, is permitted to expect continuance of years with large increase of freedom.

No human counsel hath devised, nor hath any mortal hand worked out these great things. They are the gracious gifts of the Most High God, who, while dealing with us in anger for our sins, hath nevertheless remembered mercy.

It has seemed to me fit and proper that they should be solemnly, reverently, and gratefully acknowledged as with one heart and one voice by the whole American people. I do, therefore, invite my fellow-citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next as a day of thanksgiving and praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the heavens. And I recommend to them that, while offering up the ascriptions justly due to Him for such singular deliverances and blessings, they do also, with humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience, commend to His tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners, or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife in which we are unavoidably engaged, and fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty hand to heal the wounds of the nation, and to restore it, as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes, to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquillity, and union.

This Day in the Civil War

Tuesday Nov. 26 1861

TRIUMPHANT TRENT TAKER TOASTED

Eleven days ago Captain Charles Wilkes committed the most famous act of his career: his USS San Jacinto waited until Her Majesty’s mail packet Trent left Havana, Cuba. Once they were in international waters Wilkes had ordered the ship to heave to, under threat of arms, and had removed four passengers, the Confederate commissioners to London and Paris, Mason and Slidell, and the mens’ secretaries. Tonight, having dropped the prisoners into confinement on an island in Boston Harbor, Wilkes was guest of honor at a huge banquet in Boston. Tomorrow the Trent would dock in London and the story of her voyage made known. The reaction would be quite different there.

I'm not sure this is where I reply but I thought I would give it a try. I noticed in the Weekly Fireside Chat newsletter that we could ask for help in locating a picture of a gravesite of a Civil War ancestor. Well my 3rd Great-grandfathers both served, 1 in the south and 1 in the north. Their names were:

Joe ([email protected]) has this Help Request in our newsletter for a bit for a picture of a CSA CW Ancestor buried in Pensacola, Florida. I did find the cemetery on the day I was returning to Colorado last Tuesday. The Union Hill Cemetery is a church cemetery that used to be administered by the Union Hill Baptist Church for many, many years. It has since folded and is now administered by Emerald Coast Community Church (Southern Baptist Convention). It was raining so I couldn't get a picture but I did find the gravestone.

CD Boyette
born: Aug 10, 1828 (I think that's the year)
died: Nov 25, 1887

His wife was named Elizabeth.

There are many Boyett's in the older cemetery. I found a number of graves of male Boyett's that looked like they had fought in every war since the Civil War. That seems to be one patriotic family but it must have been hard on the womenfolk.

The cemetery is located at the junction of Fairfield Boulevard and 69th Street over on the West side of Pensacola.
