Thursday night was just great. We had some new visitors and talked all night.
"Acdraft01" told us a great story her great great grandmother. It went like this:
The Union troops had showed up on their property one day and the entire
troop bivouacked on her Virginia Augusta (Oliver) Lanier's front yard in
Gadsen County, Florida. Virginia came to the front door and demanded that
the Yanks get out of her flowers and off of her front yard. One of the
soldier's took a shot at her but hit the doorframe she was standing in. The
young Yankee Lt. promptly reprimanded the shooter, apologized
graciously and withdrew his troops to a respectful distance. The bullet hole
is still there today in that door frame as a reminder of Virginia's courage and
a young lieutenant's courtesy. Thanks Acdraft01 for giving us permission to use
in this week's "Fireside".
GFH Amy also had a great song for us which I've included in the "A Bit Of
Community". And IrishInCal wouldn't leave the room until I promised to put an Irish
tune in the newsletter, so I'll do that just below in the music section. Heh Heh
Music: Now remember when you read these lyrics, you have to put in the traditional
Irish ballad phrasing.
My Own Native Land - Traditional
There's a dear little Isle, in the Western Ocean.
It's an island of purity, Aeolian grand.
It's name fills it's daughters, and sons with emotion.
When they are a-part, on a far distant strand.
Tis' Ireland, my country, the birthplace of heroes
The home of the preacher, warrior, and sage,
Of bards and chieftains whose names live in stories.
May they live on forever on history's page.
You once were a proud, and a glorious nation.
Your name and your fame, were known all over the world.
Til misfortune came o'er you, and sad desolation,
Your emerald banner, in slavery lay unfurled.
They tortured your children.
They spoiled your green banner.
They tried to exterminate you, long, long, long-ago.
But the Irish live somehow, like wild creeping flowers.
The faster you blossom, the quicker they seem to grow.
I love every blade, of grass green on your mountains,
Every leaf from your trees, and every rock on your strand.
I love your green valleys, and murmuring fountains.
I love you Irish Isle, My own dear native land.
Enjoy............

Editor's Note: for those of you who are AOL members, I want to encourage you to
feel entirely free to post any Civil War Letters, or Stories or articles that you have in
our Civil War History Files. There is also an area for you to upload photos, if you
would desire to share those with the Civil War History community. Use
"keyword=roots" to get to the Genealogy Main Screen. Then select Files, followed
by selecting History and Culture and there you will find the two upload areas I
mentioned; Civil War Files, and Civil War Photos. I would also note that the New
Genealogy Forum Web Site is being constructed. On that Web Site, the Civil War
History SIG will have an area to link to our Civil War Library (Lectures, Letters,
Songs, Poems, Files, Firesides, and Photo's). When this is complete then anyone
(not just AOL Members) will have access to all our material. We'll be sure to let you
know when you can access it.
This coming Thursday is a part of the Women in the Civil War Series and will be
the Story of Sarah Edmonds . I do think you'll enjoy this series.....
We'll keep a light on for you ....*<>*

And The Band Played On - An Announcement
(Note: I'll keep this up through March)
July 2000 National Civil War Band Festival
The American Civil War Institute of Campbellsville University and the Campbellsville University
School of Music announced today the launching of the "greatest and most significant gathering of
Civil War bands in the nation since 1865" with the University's sponsorship of The National
Civil War Band Festival, July 28-30, 2000.
The three-day music festival will be held on the campus of Campbellsville University, which is
located in south central Kentucky (82 miles southwest of Lexington; 90 miles southeast of
Louisville; and 150 miles northeast of Nashville).
Organizers of the event said that they are estimating The National Civil War Band Festival to
attract between 10,000 to 25,000 people to the City of Campbellsville.
Host bands for the festival are the Saxton's Cornet Band, based in Lexington, Kentucky, and
the Old Towne Brass, based in Huntsville, Alabama. Bands wishing to participate or seeking
further information may contact either Nicky Hughes at [email protected] or Bob Baccus at

"Ted" thanks for this neat tip. It sounds like a "once in a lifetime" event..... If any of
you Readers are interested in this, Ted has provided all the "contact" information to
get "your dibs" in early. I would suspect this will fill up in a hurry and this is a "first
time" gathering of this nature.... :-) I'm going to leave this up a bit so everyone can
mark their calendars and make arrangements if they're interested.

I Just wanted to let you know I appreciate your mention of my services in your round tables
[and newsletters] and that I have added a new page to my site in which your members might
have an interest. Actually I have added 2 pages to my site.
One.....Websites of Decendants of Prisoners another... just Decendants of Andersonville
prisoners. The second shows Prisoners name, State, Regiment, Company, as well as the
decendants name and email address. I think it will help researchers find one another. If you
could mention it in your next roundtable, I would be very thankful.

My gr gr grandfather, Pvt. Adam Schneider, 183rd Ohio Infantry, died on the Sultana on April
17, 1865, while coming home from Confederate prison with over 2,000 other parolees. Shortly
after, his family in Cincinnati was visited by a survivor of this disaster who was also his friend,
Pvt. Michael Conrad, and Conrad told my gr gr grandmother what happened to her husband. I
am looking for descendants of Conrad in the hopes that they can tell us Michael's version so
what happened the night the Sultana went down.
Thanks so much!
Pam Newhouse
{{{Pam}}} - thanks for you request. Membership - here's a request! If any of you have
this individual "Pvt. Michael Conrad" as a Civil War Ancestor, and in your research
if you have possible connections to current descendants who might just have
information relating to the incident Pam is referring to, email us and Pam... This
would be a great story if Pam finds information.

From: [email protected] (Jan Hood) and passed to us from SusiCP
SIMON POLK enlisted in the Confederate Army on 16 April 1862 at Rudes Hill, New
Market, VA. He went in as a Private. He was assigned to the 2nd VA Infantry,
Company F, Winchester Rifles. This Company and Infantry rode with Stonewall
Jackson throughout the war and was part of "Stonewall's Brigade." SIMON POLK
was listed as 'sick' in September 1862, and in a hospital at Bunker Hill, West
Va. He was later moved to a hospital in Martinsburg, W. Va., where he died on
11 October 1862. The hospital is not named.
I would appreciate anyone who may be able to help me, with any lookup or
advice.
Thank you VERY much.

Sylvester Steiner, my great, great, great grandfather, was a member of the
28th Regiment throughout the Civil War. The unit was referred to as the
"Goldstream Regiment" and organized at Philadelphia and mustered in June 28,
1861. Would anyone have information on the reason for the name of the unit,
Sylvester Steiner, or references to the service or make up of the unit.
Thanks, Dennis
Dennis - I got a note from GFH Amy this week and she thinks she has some names
that may know the origins of that name. She wanted to check it out first and make
sure. Keep your fingers crossed !!!

It is also possible that there was an Alexander and possibly others.

Thanks for the additional info about the 1918 flu epidemic. I am wondering about an epidemic
that may have ocurred in Missouri between about 1865-1870. It was probably a flu or
something similar. I lost a gr-great grandfather and his wife. He was a Dr and they had moved
there from MS. It is possible he may have served in the Confederacy, but I don't think so. His
name was John Knox. Anyone having any info about him or this epidemic---please let me
know. Thanks Linda
{{Linda}} thanks for you feedback. The only one I know was the really bad flu
epidemic in Missouri around 1915 or thereabouts. I have accounts from my mother of
her mother being deathly ill and loosing all her hair during that one. (in Bates Co.).
We'll ask the "Faithful" if anyone knows out there.

From GFH Amy:
WAIT FOR THE WAGON By R. Bishop Buckley
Will you come with me, my Phyllis dear, to yon blue mountain free?
Where the blossoms smell the sweetest, come rove along with me.
It's every Sunday morning, when I am by your side,
We'll jump into the wagon and all take a ride.
Chorus:
Wait for the wagon, wait for the wagon,
Wait for the wagon, and we'll all take a ride.
Where the river runs like silver and the birds they sing so sweet,
I have a cabin, Phyllis, and something good to eat;
Come listen to my story, it will relieve my heart;
So jump into the wagon, and off we will start.
Chorus
Do you believe, my Phyllis, dear, old Mike, with all his wealth,
Can make you half so happy as I, with youth and health?
We'll have a little farm, a horse, a pig and cow;
And you will mind the dairy, while I do guide the plough.
Chorus
Your lips are red as poppies, your hair so slick and neat,
All braided up with dahlias, and hollyhocks so sweet.
It's ev'ry sunday morning, when I am by your side,
We'll jump into the wagon, and all take a ride.
Chorus
Together, on life's journey, we'll travel till we stop,
And if we have no trouble, we'll reach the happy top;
Then come with me, sweet Phyllis, my dear, my lovely bride,
We'll jump into the wagon, and all take a ride.

Thank you, Jim, for the great article on the Roswell people who were kidnapped. I remember
when I first wrote to you asking if anyone knew about this. No one did, at that time. These
women and children were heavy on my heart, and I am delighted to hear that you are doing a
series on this.
Wouldn't it be super if there were reunions, in the future, of the descendants of those who
remained in GA and those who were taken? I get good goose-bumps, just thinking about that. I
am sure that would be an answer to many prayers uttered by those women and children, if they
survived.
Judy
{{Judy}} I do remember when you first asked about them. I had never heard of the
story then and I was tickled when I ran across these accounts. We're pretty excited
about the Women in the Civil War series. There are quite a few little known tales in
the set....

WHAT WE ARE ABOUT
OUR FOCUS: the "History of the American (United States) Civil War".
OUR GOAL: to enhance your Genealogy activity, knowledge, and "wisdom" by
talking about the history surrounding their lives and actions; specifically the "Civil
War" that our ancestors lived through and died because of.
Captain Oliver Wendell Holmes of the 20th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, said it
so well.
"I think it is a noble and pious thing
To do whatever we may by written
Word or molded bronze and sculpted
Stone to keep our memories, our
Reverence and our love alive and
To hand them on to new generations
All too ready to forget."
OUR PROMISE: to provide an "online" environment that is NOT judgmental and to
address ALL aspects of this "Pivotal Period" in our History, with honesty and truth
(as we know it).
We do "Fireside Stories" about the battles, the people and the social happenings. In addition we
dedicate one Thursday a month to the sharing of Songs, Poems and Letters from that era. So
come back and visit; we'll save you a seat at the Fireside, and keep the Cider warm..... For a
full listing of upcoming events, either look on the Schedule at the end of this Notice or in the
Upcoming Events of the Genealogy Forum.
As we review the logs, and we find new visitors who show an interest or have entered into
discussions on this topic in our Thursday sessions, we automatically add you to the distribution
for this "Weekly Fireside."
AND AGAIN TO YOU "FIRST-TIMERS" THIS WEEK, "Welcome"... :)
We heartily enjoyed your visit and participation. We really "fire up" with what members bring to
the discussions, and we hope to see more of you.... Note that for any reason, should you desire
to be removed from distribution of this "Weekly Missif," just drop us a line and we will comply
with your wishes "poste- haste".

Music: My little sojourn into the land of music this week is a little different. I was
watching Disney's Robin Hood this week with my little honey bears and it brought
back some fond memories of the singer in the movie that was Will Scarlet, who was
"The Rooster" in the Disney movie. I grew up just loving that man and I'd listen to
anything and everything he recorded. He was the writer and singer of "King of the
'Road", "Dang Me", "Do Wacka Do", Kansas City Star", "You Can't Roller
Skate in a Buffalo Herd", "Chug A Lug" and a host of others. Now here's the
test.... Heh Heh Who is this writer/singer??? If you don't know then you must have
had a stroke. LOL

This coming Thursday is Letters, Songs & Poems of the Civil War night. Don't
forget to send us any that you want to share.....
We'll keep a light on for you ....*<>*

MEMBERS HELPING MEMBERS!!..
Here's how it works.. If you are trying to get photographs of a gravesite or battlefield,
to collect for your Civil War ancestor research and records, then send us a request and
we will post it here... Other members seeing your request and being in the near
vicinity, and are willing to assist can email you direct (this protects your privacy) and
work out the details. We HIGHLY recommend the "Requester" pay for all film costs
and any postage involved for a helping member. This is intended to be a "Free"
assistance between members (with the exception of defraying film and postage costs).
Do unto others as.... you know :-) Keep us posted on how this is working, so we can
share them in the "Fireside"!!

Thanks so much!

this individual "Pvt. Michael Conrad" as a Civil War Ancestor, and in your research
if you have possible connections to current descendants who might just have
information relating to the incident Pam is referring to, email us and Pam... This
would be a great story if Pam finds information.

Thanks to Curren for the website for EPIDEMICS. Haven't looked at it yet, but will. Yes, the
1915 flu epidemic wiped-out about half of the world---it's pretty well known. Whatever
happened to my gr gr grandparents in MO in the 1860's was probably a more isolated event.
Thanks for all input. Linda

Thank you, thank you!!! My husband and I have signed. I am so tired of hearing that our
Southern Heritage is bigotry. I have always been taught to respect and love our Southern
people of all races. Our families lost everything in that war, including lives, and it was over, more
than one hundred years ago. I don't understand why we Southerners are so misunderstood. (Is
it because of a few radical groups??) We kept one thing from that time in history, and that is our
LOVE of the South and our Southern Heritage. I just wish that would be respected instead of
being so misunderstood. We have rights too.
I thank you from the bottom of my southern heart for giving us that site.

What is A Brevet?
As Captain Forbes walked off parade,
Sam Green inquiringly said:
"Pray tell me, Cap., -- and tell me true,
Why all those officers in blue
Walk up and touch their caps to you;
They've leaves and eagles, them'ere chaps,
Whilst you've but bars upon your straps."
"Why, Sam," says Forbes, "you _must_ be green;
The reason's plainly to be seen: --
My straps, so humble in their place,
Are worth the symbol on their face,
Whilst leaves and eagles pay no debts:--
Those officers are all brevets."
Says Green, "that puzzles me,--you bet:--
Cap, tell me, -- what is a brevet?"
"Well, Sam -- to put it through your pate,
You listen, whilst I illustrate.
You see yon turkey on the fence:--
That's turkey, Sam, in every sense;
Yon turkey-buzzard on the tree:--
He's _brevet_ turkey:--do you see?"
Moral
"A Turkey has some value, Sam,
A Buzzard isn't worth a damn!"

Schedule of Upcoming Topics/Events*****

is traveling for his paying job. If you missed Thursday night's edition of songs, letters

and we certainly are honored to be able to share them for him.
While I have the opportunity, I want to thank those of you who have visited the
Bits of Blue and Gray column at http://www.stategensites.com I hope you're enjoying
the trivia questions and learning from them. If any of you has trivia questions I could
use, I sure do wish you'd send them to me along with the answers and a source verifying
it.. unless you don't mind if I use your screen name as the source. At the site you'll also
find a Message Board where you can leave suggestions, ask questions and make
comments.
If you haven't been there yet, this month's column is the story of Richard Kirkland
"The Angel of Marye's Heights" written by our very own HOST GFS TEG. Next month
I'll be sharing some letters folks have sent to me.
Just in case you missed this, please use the following screen names in your email

When Amy finishes her training, she will match the rest of us. <G> Please do NOT use
our old addresses, those names will be deleted soon if they haven't been already.
Music: Jim's music review will return when he gets back from his week long stay
in Turkey... but I suspect one of the songs he might have been thinking about this past
weekend was "Off we go into the wild blue yonder, flying high.... "

SGSchenk joined us in the SIG a couple of weeks ago and told us a quick story about his
grandmother's great aunt. I asked him if he wouldn't please write the story down and
send it in email to me so I could share them with you. He sent me two!! Both are really
neat stories but my favorite of the two is the second one. Enjoy.... and THANKS Steven
so very much for sharing with us!!

Mary Lincoln's Hats
My grandmother's great Aunt Ginnie (Virginia Shaw) worked in a very elegant
hat shop across Lafayette Square from the White House. It was run by a French lady who
made the best hats in Washington, and all the finest ladies in the city bought their hats
there.
Aunt Ginnie was interviewed in the Philadelphia paper years later (I have the
article), and told of Mary Lincoln often coming into the shop, and chattering away for
hours at a time with the owner of the shop, as well as with the shop girls. Aunt Ginny
was very impressed that such a Great Lady as the President's wife would talk to all the
girls in such a friendly manner, and also that she never seemed to have anything of any
importance to say. It was all chit-chat, frivolous gossip, and silly "Girl Talk", and Mrs.
Lincoln went on and on and on.
She loved bright colors, flash, and flair; feathers, beads and lace. Her personal
taste bordered on being "too much".
She met other ladies there who came into the shop, and talked with them for a
while until they left, and then went back to talking to the shop staff.
Aunt Ginny described what Washington was like in the days after Lincoln was
shot. All the shops were closed, and their windows were hung with black mourning
bunting, with pictures of Lincoln placed in the windows, with flowers. The streets were
empty, and nobody was out or about at all.
I remember I was a teenager (15) when Kennedy was shot in 1963. I lived in
Arlington, Virginia, across the river from Washington. At that time, Pennsylvania
Avenue had not yet been rebuilt, and was still lined with the old store fronts that had been
there in Aunt Ginny's time. They were all new and fashionable in her day, but by my
day, they had become run down and shabby and old fashioned.
I went into town on my bike the next day (Saturday), and rode straight down the
middle of an empty Pennsylvania Avenue. There was no traffic, no cars, no people -
just a somber dark late November hush over the whole city, which seemed empty.
All the shops were closed, every window was draped in black bunting, and
pictures of Kennedy were reverently placed in the windows, with flowers - exactly as
Aunt Ginny had seen those same windows on that same street a hundred years earlier.
It was a very strange moment for me, and I will never forget it (after all, I am over
50 now, and I am writing you about it...) I thought of Aunt Ginnie walking that same
street, looking at those same windows, decorated the same way, but a century had passed,
and the face was different. Everything else was the same.
During the next few days and weeks, Mary Lincoln sent all of her hats back to the
shop to be transformed into mourning Black. They were stripped of any color, the fabric
was all dyed black, and so were the feathers (black). Mrs. Lincoln did not spend any
more time in the shop after that.
When I was young, my grandmother still had an old trunk that had many scraps
and end pieces of beautifully colored silks, and intricate brocades, ~ pieces & samples &
ends of cloth & lace & braiding & beadwork in intricate patterns. They were the
leftovers from Mary Lincoln's hats, before Abraham was shot. They were beautiful. I
still have some of them.

Mrs. Rawlin's Petticoats
My Greatgreat Uncle, Samuel Davis, of Roanoke, Virginia was in the Civil war,
on both sides. His family was sharply divided between North and South, with relatives
on both sides of the Mason Dixon Line, as well as both sides of the conflict.
He started the war fighting for Virginia, in the Independent Grays under Capt.
Richard C. Taylor, 6th Reg. Va. Inf. Co. H. He was captured during battle, and taken as a
prisoner of war to a camp in southern New Jersey. Many of his relatives lived in New
Jersey, and were staunch Yankees.
When Sam was a boy, his mother (Leurana Dawley Davis) would take him and
his sister (my great-grandmother Orleania Medora Davis, Mrs. William Tabor Otis) to
the slave markets, and protested when slave families were broken up and sold to different
plantations. She was an early social activist and abolitionist, and got such a reputation in
town for her protests that the family was warned by a sympathetic friend one day to "get
out of town" before nightfall, because a group of angry locals was preparing to burn
down their house and run them out of town that night.
They hastily gathered a few things, and fled for their lives, leaving everything
behind, and ended up in southern New Jersey, where they had relatives. Later, as a
young man, Sam Davis moved back to Roanoke, and was resident there when the war
broke out, but his sympathies were split, to say the least, having friends and family in the
North as well as the south
Although his mother remained in the North, his mother's sister, Mahala Dawley
Conrad, married a local doctor in Virginia, and spent the war in Roanoke and Richmond.
She had a friend by the name of Mrs. Martha Rawlins, whose husband, a doctor, was a
colleague of her husband, Dr. Conrad. Mrs. Rawlins undertook a trip north with Dr.
Rawlins to visit the Confederate soldiers in various prison camps in the North.
When Mrs. Rawlins arrived at the camp where Sam Davis was being held, she
took several of her petticoats and had them passed secretly around the camp to the
soldiers who were from Roanoke and Richmond. They all wrote messages to their
families and loved ones back home on the petticoats, and Mrs. Rawlins wore them back
through the enemy lines, home to Virginia, knowing that she would not be searched, as
the wife of a noted physician on a humanitarian mission.
Sam Davis wrote a message to his Aunt Mehala Conrad on one of the petticoats.
When Mrs. Rawlins got home, she cut up the petticoats, and delivered all the
messages to the families who were waiting so desperately for news of their missing
menfolk. One of those messages was for her friend, Mahala Conrad, and it has come
down in the family to me. I still have the faded square of white cotton with Sam's
message to his Aunt, assuring her he was OK, and would survive. And survive he did.
Sam Davis later joined the Union army, and finished the war as an officer in the
New Jersey cavalry (3rd Reg., Co. M). After the war, he married a Jersey girl, and died
in N.J. of old age.

treasures they are to pass on down.

SOMETHING ELSE SPECIAL
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
Thursday night Acdraft01 also shared a special story that's been passed down through the
family. Seems Acdraft's gggaunt was staying at her grandfather's house in Columbus,
GA. All the men were away fighting so the women were alone to take care of things.
The Yankees stormed into the house and when they saw the piano there, they demanded
the aunt play Yankee Doodle. When she would not, the officer in charge told her what
they would do if she didn't. So she sat down and in defiance, played Dixie. The officer
made good on his threat.... they poured a barrel of syrup into the piano.
{{{{{Acdraft}}}}} Now that's what I call being in a real sticky situation!!

Thank you, thank you!!! My husband and I have signed. I am so tired of hearing
that our Southern Heritage is bigotry. I have always been taught to respect and love our
Southern people of all races. Our families lost everything in that war, including lives,
and it was over, more than one hundred years ago. I don't understand why we
Southerners are so misunderstood. (Is it because of a few radical groups??) We kept one
thing from that time in history, and that is our LOVE of the South and our Southern
Heritage. I just wish that would be respected instead of being so misunderstood. We
have rights too.
I thank you from the bottom of my southern heart for giving us that site.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
OUR FOCUS: the "History of the American (United States) Civil War".
OUR GOAL: to enhance your Genealogy activity, knowledge, and "wisdom" by talking
about the history surrounding their lives and actions; specifically the "Civil War" that our
ancestors lived through and died because of.
Captain Oliver Wendell Holmes of the 20th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment,
said it so well.
"I think it is a noble and pious thing
To do whatever we may by written
Word or molded bronze and sculpted
Stone to keep our memories, our
Reverence and our love alive and
To hand them on to new generations
All too ready to forget."
OUR PROMISE: to provide an "online" environment that is NOT judgmental and to
address ALL aspects of this "Pivotal Period" in our History, with honesty and truth (as
we know it).
We do "Fireside Stories" about the battles, the people and the social happenings. In
addition we dedicate one Thursday a month to the sharing of Songs, Poems and Letters
from that era. So come back and visit; we'll save you a seat at the Fireside, and keep the
Cider warm..... For a full listing of upcoming events, either look on the Schedule at the
end of this Notice or in the Upcoming Events of the Genealogy Forum.
As we review the logs, and we find new visitors who show an interest or have entered
into discussions on this topic in our Thursday sessions, we automatically add you to the
distribution for this "Weekly Fireside."
AND AGAIN TO YOU "FIRST-TIMERS" THIS WEEK, "Welcome"... :)
We heartily enjoyed your visit and participation. We really "fire up" with what members
bring to the discussions, and we hope to see more of you.... Note that for any reason,

The following 2 letters came from the CIVIL WAR maillist. I contacted the sender, Joan
Keller in MI and asked her permission to use them. This is what she told me:
"They are letters from my great, great Uncle Josiah Staley. The originals are in the Ohio
Historical Society. I transcribed them by hand. As you might guess they are in sad
shape. They were found in a chicken coop on the family farm in S. Dakota. A Judge who
knew the family passed them on to preservation at the OHS"
.
Letter #1
"Camp Monroeville, October 6,
Some say we have to go to Crawford Company to tend to the sesesh. You can tell certain
ones not to let me catch them within musket shot. If we are not sent to Crawford, I think
I will get a pass next Friday night and walk home.
I think you had better come about Monday for then the men are all coming to camp then
you can see the whole Regiment together. If I go home you can bring me back.
"Camp Wilson, Va. October 26,1862
Dear Wife:
I wrote to you the day we came to this camp. Since that time I had two likenesses taken.
I put them into a carpet sack directed to Mrs. Mathews in Crestline. She will leave them
at Neumans store where you can get them. You can take yoiur choice and then fix the
other up good and safe and send it to mother in Iowa. You had better put pasteboard in
front so it will not get broke. If I was in your place, I would take the dark one.
The place we are camped is on a side hill with the big hills all around. It is a sesesh farm.
The owner was taken prisoner and died. I am now in his house which is a large one built
70 years ago. One of the slaves belonging to the farm sits groaning in the corner. She is
80 years old. There is an old Irishman with her. I never saw such misery. She is covered
with filth from end to end without enough clothes to cover her nakedness but it is not her
fault. The Irishman says that her owner offered her her freedom. What a blessed thing it
would be if this poor old creature would accept this liberal offer. She could then run
through the mountains where she pleased and scratch for her self if she only could walk.
The old Irishman carries her the crackers.
We will leave this place in a few days and go to Richmond about 60 miles from here but I
would rather go to Tennessee, but we must go where we are told and do as we can.You
must take good care of yourself and the children and don't let Frank and Mont fight. Get
your likeness taken in one side of a case and Frank's in the other for me the first time you
go to town. Get a good one if you have to pay double price, then do it up well and send it
on to me.
There are rebels all around here but they dare not say much. There are the remains of
two brick houses between this and town which shows the vengeance of union soldiers.
There is no such army nearer than 60 miles of us so they say but scouts are not far off- It
is said there was three tried to pass our guard the other night but I don't believe it. I don't
stand guard for I am the cook in our mess which is sixteen men. We sleep in one small
tent but we are going to get larger ones soon. If I don't get home in the spring, I would
like to have you come and see me if we are no further from home then than we are now it
would not cost very much. You could make as much at mending and washing in a month
as it would cost to come and go home again. That is if you was a stout woman.
There is a good deal I could write if I could think of it but I must close, I will write soon
again. Direct to Clarksburgh, putting in the Co. and Regt.
Josiah Staley
Send some three cent stamps. Sometimes I can't get them. "

Letter #2 also sent by Joan Keller
"Beverly,Va.Nov.l5th.l862
Dear Parny:
I wrote to you a few days ago, but as we have moved since I thought it would be well to
write a few lines tonight. There appears to be a different movement going on now. The
expedition that went up the Tiger has returned, the rebels all put out except 60 prisoners
they took. They brought them past our camp this morning they were the meanest looking
set I ever saw. They were ragged and dirty. Some of them looked about as interesting as
the old scalawlag that used to pass up and down Brokensword. We came here this
evening and then received orders to go on to Webster. We have to leave at 3 o'clock in
the morning. I can't tell what is to be done. The rebels are playhing smash with the
railroad over there and troops have been leaving here fast. The 87th. Pa. and Ninth Va.
Regts have been on the go for ten days, but they had to leave this evening. The poor
fellows looked tired but they are well drilled men and must go ahead of us.
Some say there is a fight going on but if there is, it islikely it will be over before we get
there. It will take us two days beside our railroad traveling. I am afraid it will rain by
morning. If it does, we will be hard traveling. One night while we were at Huttonville,
we were ordered to put all our rig so that we could get it and strike no light in the tents
and fall into line in three minutes. But for my part, I laid down with as little fear as I ever
did. I find it is a good thing to have a clear conscience. We were not disturbed.
I have got no letter from you y et. Thomas has got three. He got one tonight. Some of
the boys get three at a time. Nothing does a soldier so much good. Then some yells,
"Josiah Staley,Fred Staley has got your wife and boy's letter through mistakeK". You
had better believe it makes me feel good but no letter yet.
Our men took l50 head of cattle and 40 horses from the sesesh.
Josiah Staley
The pictures are first rate I will write in a few days, Don't get uneasy, I
don't think we will have a fight."
{{{{{Joan}}}}} I've taken the "liberty" to add you to our distribution of the Weekly
Fireside newsletter. I thank you so very much for allowing me to share Josiah Staley's
letters with the "faithful".

Here's how it works.. If you are trying to get photographs of a gravesite or battlefield, to
collect for your Civil War ancestor research and records, then send us a request and we
will post it here... Other members seeing your request and being in the near vicinity, and
are willing to assist can email you direct (this protects your privacy) and work out the
details. We HIGHLY recommend the "Requester" pay for all film costs and any postage
involved for a helping member. This is intended to be a "Free" assistance between
members (with the exception of defraying film and postage costs). Do unto others as....
you know :-) Keep us posted on how this is working, so we can share them in the
"Fireside"!!

"Hello, Does anyone have access to the Special Census taken of Civil War
Veterans? I am looking for any BERRYHILL vets.
My grgrGrandfather William BERRYHILL died during the war,
and it is said that at least two of his brothers were also in the Civil War,
but I don't know which ones; They could be: David, Matthew, James or John Thanks
for any help, Kathy
[a ps:] I forgot to mention that I may not have all of the sons' names.
It is also possible that there was an Alexander and possibly others.
[Since this is from a List concerning Putnam County, Ohio, I suspect that
the information would fall into Ohio Ciil War Veterans.]

HI,
I am hoping to make it Thursday night to the chat! I was wondering if you would do a
favor for me..... As you know I am the secretary for the Madison County (NY) Civil War
Round Table. We now have a web page. I am just beginning to learn how to make pages
so it isn't fancy but it has info at least! Could you let "the Faithful" know about it in the
next Fireside? I'd appreciate it! Madison County (NY) Civil War Round Table Here's
the link to it...... Also, in case he hasn't already contacted you, a man named Bruce
Mowday who is the co-author of a book called "Unlikely Allies". It is about Fort
Delaware, a Civil War prison community near Delaware City on Pea Patch Island in the
Delaware River. For more info, please contact Bruce at [email protected]. He
asked if I could let people know about it so I am. Some of the faithful might be very
interested in the book.
Thanks again!

WHAT WE ARE ABOUT
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
Note that for any reason,
should you desire to be removed from distribution of this "Weekly Missif," just drop us a
line and we will comply with your wishes "poste- haste".
